Amazing maze uk5/17/2023 ![]() ![]() In the age of Atari, games had to be designed with incredible skill because the computer systems that ran them were so limited. Maze-navigating games were very common back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but the method used to generate a maze varied, depending on the programmer. It seems the logic behind it has been lost forever. But they got more than they bargained for: they found a mystery bit of code they couldn’t explain. Like intrepid explorers of catacombs, Aycock and Copplestone sought curious relics inside Entombed. Inside they are finding clues to how the early days of video gaming came about, but also secrets that can help modern programmers with some of the problems they are facing today. The pair are among a growing number of “video game archaeologists” who are unearthing long forgotten pieces of software and pulling them apart. And because it had fallen into obscurity, it hadn’t been pulled apart and analysed in depth before – one the main reasons Aycock and his co-author Tara Copplestone at the University of York, UK, were drawn to Entombed as a subject to study over the other 500 games made for the Atari 2600 console. There was always something intriguing about Entombed, recalls John Aycock at the University of Calgary, in Alberta, Canada. The forgotten software that inspired our modern world. But recently, a computer scientist and a digital archaeologist decided to pull apart the game’s source code to investigate how it was made. Released in 1982, Entombed was far from a best-seller and today it’s largely forgotten. ![]() A downward-scrolling, two-dimensional maze that players had to navigate expertly in order to evade the “clammy, deadly grip” of their zombie foes. But this was the chilling trial that faced players of Entombed, an Atari 2600 game, according to the instruction manual. “You and your team of archaeologists have fallen into the ‘catacombs of the zombies’.” A miserable situation, to be sure. ![]()

Vampire finch5/17/2023 ![]() ![]() Then, use this handy calculator to determine just how long humanity could last in the face of a vampire apocalypse. The American vampire finch ( Geospiza vespertilio) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae and one of the Darwin's finches that originally did not exist, but has since been created by SciiFii and introduced throughout the rainforests, wetlands, forests, open woodlands, grasslands, shrublands, and scrublands across mainland North America and South America to help boost biodiversity. ![]() With those critters in mind, perhaps the Dracula parrot with its innocent diet of sweet fruit is not so aptly named after all.Īfter this look at Pesquet's parrot, meet Alex the parrot and decide if he was, indeed, the world's smartest bird. Other hematophagous critters include vampire bats and the eel-like lamprey - sometimes referred to as a vampire fish. Then they dig in - tearing through the flesh and picking out the fat from the sheep's back. A Kea will use its curved beak to rip the wool right off a sheep's back and get to the bare skin. This crazy bird is one of ten parrots native to New Zealand. That's pretty savage, but not quite as brutal as the Kea. Vampire finches peck at the tail feathers of other birds to draw blood, like a wood pecker taps a tree for bugs. The vampire finch of the Galápagos Islands is a bloodthirsty species that will ruthlessly target bigger birds, like Nazcas or blue-footed boobies, specifically for their blood. ![]() You'll be happy to know that there are actual birds out there that do practice hematophagy - or feeding on blood. Perhaps the Dracula parrot, with its innocuous eating habits, didn't fully satisfy your bloodlust. This, along with the usual blight of habitat loss due to the logging industry, has left the Dracula parrot with a "vulnerable" status on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) list of threatened species. Its wings are highly prized in certain indigenous markets and its chicks command very high prices, too. They are known to give out haunting calls that have been described as harsh, raspy, and growling, and they can be heard from quite long distances.Įxperience the Pesquet's parrot's eerie scream here.ĭespite its name, the Dracula parrot is the hunt ed and not the hunt er. Instead, they jump from branch to branch. Unlike other parrots, these birds don't climb branches to move around in trees. When in flight, Pesquet's parrots alternate between rapidly flapping their wings and enjoying short glides. Researchers have gleaned that females lay up to two eggs at a time in a nest inside a big, hollow tree.ĭracula parrots appear to be somewhat social and are typically spotted in pairs or sometimes large groups of up to 20. Not much is known about the Dracula parrot's breeding habits in the wild. One telltale mark is that most males have a red spot on their heads behind their eyes. There is very little difference between male and female Dracula parrots. Size, Behaviors, And An Uncertain Futureĭracula parrots are fairly large, clocking in at 18 inches long and weighing between 24 and 28 ounces. Like vultures, the Dracula parrot has evolved to lose the feathers on its head so that it doesn't get messy with the sticky syrup of figs. However, nectar and certain flowers have also been known to frequent the diet of these frugivores. This parrot feasts mainly on a sticky species of hard-to-find figs, the rarity of which endangers its survival. Pesquet's Parrots Are Picky Eatersīesides its resemblance, that's about all the Dracula parrot has in common with vultures. Outside of this, there are only a few zoos worldwide that house the creepy vulturine parrot. These ominous looking birds are only native to the mountainous rainforests of the island of New Guinea in the wider geographical Pacific area known as Oceania. It's truly one-of-a-kind - and the resemblance it bears to Dracula is somewhat uncanny. ![]() Experience the Dracula - or Pesquet's - parrot in its natural habitat.įormally called Pesquet's parrot or Psittrichas fulgidus, this sinister-looking bird is the only member of its genus and its genus is the only member of its subfamily. ![]()

The falconeer achievement guide5/17/2023 ![]() ![]() In fact, The Falconeer’s greatest strength can be found in its lovingly crafted world and lore. In several missions you’re tasked with escorting a ship, and I’d find myself circling high above the sea, imagining the crew occasionally catching sight of my falcon’s silhouette against the sun, and wondering if that would be enough to protect them. While almost every mission eventually ends up in a combat encounter, you’re given plenty of time to take in the strangely beautiful fantasy world that Sala has brought to life. There is some real joy to be found in The Falconer's quiet moments. ![]() ![]() I’d be climbing into the sky and wondering if I could perform a sneak attack from above the thick cloud layer, or attempting to flank an enemy I’d spotted from the distance, only to be disappointed when each combat encounter ends up exactly the same. During much of my time playing The Falconeer, I couldn’t help but think how cool it could be. However, things can quickly get quite repetitive. With its bold and impressive art style, The Falconeer can really sell you on these epic encounters, and emerging victorious from a particularly tight dogfight by the skin of your beak is empowering. At its best, combat encounters can be thrilling, as you and your falcon roll and weave to avoid enemy fire, or dive down to the cover of a nearby island while a lightning storm rages around you. That’s not to say that the fights aren’t fun, though. Whether you’re taking on a pirate Falconeer, a dragon-esque Weaver or an intimidating war blimp, your task is almost always the same - shoot it until it dies. These are the tools that you’ll take into every dogfight - or should that be birdfight? - and, quite frankly, it doesn’t leave a lot of room to mix things up in terms of strategy. You'll be thankful for the game's photo mode with shots like this. Your bird also has health that regenerates over time, and an energy bar that allows you to perform barrel rolls. As reloading animations go, it’s right up there. Flying through a storm recharges these batteries, and also feels extremely cool, with bolts of lightning snaking their way towards you. As a Falconeer, you have your beast of burden kitted out with a long-range weapon of choice and a set of rechargeable lightning batteries, which serve as your ammunition. It’s a spectacularly ambitious game as well, having been created by one-man development team Tomas Sala, offering a really gorgeous 3D world to explore.Īt its core, The Falconeer is an air combat game, flipping Star Fox’s concept of animalised pilots in man-made aircraft on its head by putting human pilots on living and breathing giant birds. Soaring across the sea on a giant eagle like some sort of gun-toting Gandalf, the game looks to fulfil those flights of fancy that have long preoccupied humanity, of growing wings and taking to the sky. It’s easy to be drawn in by the concept of The Falconeer. ![]()

Kazuha ascension materials5/17/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re saving all your Primogems for Kazuha and not his sword, though, you could opt for the Sacrificial Sword. The refinement skill is a bit convoluted, but basically it increases the user’s attack by 20% and boosts normal, charged, and plunging damage by 16%. Since Kazuha’s usefulness revolves around elemental mastery, regardless of whether he’s in a support or active role, your build should focus on bumping that stat up as much as you can.įreedom Sworn Sword is the best of both worlds for Kazuha, since it has a high base attack stat and gives a hefty elemental mastery boost with its secondary stat. Add that to a big bump in elemental mastery from his passive talents, and it’s absolutely worth experimenting with him in a more active role as well. That’s optimal, especially if you have the right Artifacts on Kazuha, but his skill and the boost to his plunging and elemental attacks are enough to deal with most threats while he’s on the field. The current Genshin meta usually has Kazuha in a support role, grouping enemies and making it easier to spread elements. His burst generates a small field of Anemo that can interact with other elements and deal damage of that element in pulses. ![]() Kazhua’s skill creates a vortex that draws enemies in and launches them, and if it reacts with another element, it boosts Kazuha’s plunging damage by 200%. Kazuha is more of a sub-DPS, but with the right setup, he can deal more damage than some main DPS characters and facilitate powerful reactions. He’s part of a double wish event with Klee, and the four-star characters on both banners are Heizou, Ningguang, and Thoma. Kazuha’s first rerun is live now through August 2 as part of Genshin Impact’s 2.8 update. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. ![]()

Who was the plague doctor5/17/2023 ![]() ![]() As one of the possible means of becoming immortal, transhumanism offers digital immortality. ![]() Based on humanity’s desire to overcome death, it proposes to use the technology for human nature modification. Transhumanism does provide certain advantages however, its solution has a dire price. While not providing any direct evidence, Essenger implies unclear intentions of these “doctors” trying to cure the human “plague.” Their attitude and mockery in their offer present ambiguity that people have to face and ultimately make a decision. In the end, the author poses a contradiction between freedom and its cost. The finale features a screaming vocal technique at the words “Let’s play a game,” which is generally used at emotional peaks, with the consequent shift to the modulated voice mentioning “humanity in chains” (Essenger). Moreover, the offering side sees everything happening as a game, which indicates its inhuman attitude. The latter, and humanity as a whole, is considered a disease, while the digital transcendence is called a cure (Essenger). The text also highlights the difference between “we,” the offering side, and “you,” the side accepting the offer. With the words “We’ll save your soul, and all we need is your mind,” the author saws the seeds of anxiety into the listeners’ minds (Essenger). Nevertheless, the overall effect can not be called comforting – the song makes its listeners thoughtful rather than motivated. Further, in the song, Essenger mentions the absence of fear, pain, and nightmares as well as loneliness since “your friends will be right there.” Combined with the atmosphere, which is achieved by the voice modulation and electronic approach to music writing, the song produces a substantial futuristic effect on its listeners. Your soul online will turn back time and take away the pain.” The words describe the advantages of such connection right away in the promise of immortality and the absence of biological issues. Essenger described this concept in his song, as is seen in the first verse: “Let’s play a game: a circuit to your brain. Manzocco explains mind-uploading as the “transfer of the individual conscious mind from the brain that hosts it into a substratum of a different, artificial type – but still capable of supporting all of its functions” (195-196). The concept was further strengthened by the invention of a medium that can connect every computer on the planet – the internet.Īfter the internet creation, the comparison of the human brain to storage devices brought the question about the direct connection of the brain to it or even the complete transfer to the digital network space. At its core, it implies that a person is definable as a collection of data thus, copying it to the computer can be considered a form of immortality (Manzocco, 197). However, the evolution of thought resulted in the variability of possible means – for example, the transhumanistic concept of digital immortality. The idea of achieving immortality can not be called new, considering all the tales and myths created during premodern. It can be interpreted as enhancing human physical and mental conditions to reach the post-human stage, with the final goal being to defeat death itself. ![]() Manzocco defines transhumanism as the idea of human beings freely designing their biological evolution through technology (4). However, the definition of transhumanism proves it holds a plethora of rhetorical questions. It manages to not only convey a message about transhumanism and its advantages but also to showcase its possible intimidating consequences.įor people unfamiliar with transhumanistic ideas, the song might resemble another curious product of science fiction. Its ideas are popular enough to start reflecting on the contemporary culture – the Plague Doctor song by Essenger serves as a perfect example. In this context, the philosophy of transhumanism stands on a bulk of modern thought. Consequently, questions about pushing the existing human boundaries even further became a matter of time. Scientific progress uncovered possibilities that were previously deemed as purely fictional, such as radio or voyage to space. The philosophy also did not manage to escape the changes. Many people nowadays believe that God does not exist (atheism) or think it is impossible to prove either his existence or non-existence (religious agnosticism) (Manzocco, 31). For example, it became strong enough to push religion from the leading position in determining the vision of the world. This kind of technological advance drastically changes people’s lifestyles and ways of thinking, permeating all areas of life. Humanity has registered a tremendous surge in technological development during the last centuries. ![]() |
